Recycling Requirements

Recycling Requirements
As of March 2003, Plumstead Township adopted two important changes to recycling practices:

1. Municipal, industrial and commercial establishments must recycle. This is in addition to the previous requirement that residents recycle.

2. Leaf and yard waste must also be recycled. Any other means of disposal is a violation of the law. Residents and commercial establishments are encouraged to compost leaf and yard waste on their property. Licensed haulers also will be available to recycle leaf waste that is separated from other trash. Leaf and yard waste is defined as leaves, garden residues, shrubbery, tree trimmings and similar materials, but not grass clippings.

These new requirements have been implemented as a result of state law. Act 101 (the Municipal Waste Planning, Recycling and Waste Reduction Act of 1988) mandates municipalities of a certain population to require recycling. Prior to March 2003, Plumstead required only residential recycling. The population of the Township has now reached the level at which recycling is mandated under Act 101. By ordinance 2003-01, the Township adopted these new requirements.

Under the new ordinance, commercial, municipal and institutional establishments in Plumstead must (unless an exemption applies) now recycle:

  • aluminum and bimetal cans
  • high-grade office paper
  • glass containers
  • number 1 and 2 plastic containers; and
  • corrugated paper.
