There are several steps you do to help eliminate mosquito-breeding areas around your home. Mosquitoes can breed in any puddle that last for more than four days, so eliminating breeding grounds reduces the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.
- Eliminate standing water in all types of containers such as ceramic pots, plastic containers, cans, and birdbaths.
- Remove old tires from your property. Stagnant water in tires can produce millions of mosquitoes each season!
- Make sure your recycling containers are not left outside. Those that are left outside should have holes drilled in the bottom to drain water.
- Clean roof gutters at least once per year to prevent water from collecting due to leaves clogging.
- Do not rake leaves and yard debris into storm drains that might clog water flow.
- Turn over wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
- Even if you are not using your swimming pool keep it clean and chlorinate and make sure your pool cover does not collect water. Poorly maintained pools are breeding grounds.
- Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
